The flat sides allow the letters to have an extra area between them, thereby making the text greater legible at small sizes, which is in particular crucial for the Apple Watch.

Both SF and SF Compact typeface each have two optical sizes: “display” for huge and “textual content” for small text. Compared to the show, the letters in textual content have larger apertures and greater beneficial letter-spacing.
